GOOD IS // Useful Resources

In the same book as I found the examples of print from, I also found a glossary of definitions

Here is just a list of print processes and finishes which will be useful to have a resource of;

PRINTING

Bespoke Pantone Colours
colours created by mixing inks toether to form an individual colour that does not appear on Panton referencing charts

Ceramic Labeling
Application of ceramic inks directly onto the surface of a glass bottle through a screen printing process

Duotone
Where two colours are printed together to make and image richer and denser in colour

Full Colour
Almost all mass-produced print uses lithogrpahyic inks. As a rule, full-colour printing is achieved through the comination of 4 colours CMYK

Full Colour Black
Black greated by combining CMYK

Halftone
A process used to reproduce and illustration which involved breaking it up into small dots of different densities to simulate a full tonal range

Holographic
Image made with a split laser beam that, when suitably illuminated, shows the 3D image

Metallix Printing System
A printing system that does not require the use of metallized inks. Colours and metallic effects are build up using the stochastic and halftone screening for different print elements, together with two registered varnishes, achieved inline

Offset Lithography
Method of printing using places with image areas attracting ink and nonimage areas repelling ink. Nonimage areas may be coated with water to repel the oily ink or may have surface, such as silicon, that repels ink.

Screen printing
A printing method that applies ink onto the surface of the material with a squeegee through a fine silk mesh. This achieves a much denser application fo ink that lithography and may be used on almost limitless variety of surfaces.

Spot Colour
A special colour not generated by the CMYK process

Tritone
Where 3 colours are printed together to make and image richer and denser in colour

Two passes of Ink
Printing the same colours twice, with the second pass of the press printing directly over the first to create a deeper, more intense result

Vegetable Based Inks
Inks that have made with vegetable-based oils apposed to mineral based such as petroleum - more environmentally friendly

Web-fed press
Printing press that prints onto a continuous roll of paper or plastic film. Printing is fast and can be applied to both sides of the material at once.

FINISHING

Cut-and-stack labelling
Conventional method of labelling that deliver labels from a series of stacked flat sheets. Slower than the more modern and versatile reel-fed process

Cutting Form
similar to Die cutting

Debossing
Having a surface pattern pressed into the surface fo the material. This process is also known as blind embossing

Die-cutting
The method by which intricate shapes can be cut from cartonboard. This process require a custom-made die, which has sharp steel edge constructed to cut the required shape

Embossing
Having a raised surface pattern. This is created by pressing the packagin paterial between a male and female form

Etching
The process of parking a metal or glass surface by corrosion, usually acid

Foil Blocking
Similar to Hot-foil stamping

Hot Foil Stamping
Application of neat and metallic film in a specialty printing process that produces a shiny design on paper, vinyl, textiles, wood, hard plastic, leather, and other materials. Foil stamping is also called hot stamping, dry stamping, foil imprinting, or leaf stamping.

Lamination
The application of clear matte or gloss protective film over the printed surface of a sheet of paper or card

Laser cutting
A process that produced intricate cutting through most materials using a laser beem

Oxidative polymerisation varnish
Varnish applied wiht an additiona pass through the press to provide barrier protectino over the printed surface. (also see UV varnish)

Feel-fed Labeling
Process of applying labels to containers from a reel. Delivered at a high speed, this process allows a low-cost solution with superior optical qualities

'Soft-touch' varnish
A varnishing effect that has a light sponginess, leaving a slight softness the surface to white it is applied

UV varnish / Spot Varnish
A plastic - based varnish applied by screen printing, available in matte, satin and gloss finishes. It can be applied over the entire surface or treated as a spot varnish, enabling the designer to print elements purely as varnish or to higher selected elements on the page.
